Wellness Wheel (8 Dimension of Wellness)
The concept of wellness as multidimensional is essential for achieving holistic health and fulfillment. The Wellness Wheel, or 8 Dimensions of Wellness, provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and nurturing various aspects of well-being. Each dimension - spiritual, emotional, physical, social, environmental, intellectual, financial, and occupational - is interconnected, and attention to all is necessary to maintain balance and vitality.
Living consciously and becoming self-directed are central tenets of this holistic approach. By recognizing the interconnectedness of the dimensions and actively engaging in practices that support each one, individuals can evolve and achieve their full potential.
Wellness is indeed a cyclical process, influenced by the choices we make and the values we prioritize. Whether the cycle is positive, negative, or stagnant depends on our daily actions and intentions. It's important to understand that the journey to wellness is personal and not a competition with others; it's about self-improvement and growth.
Integrating the Wellness Model into therapeutic modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and the Strength-Based Perspective can lead to a more comprehensive and effective approach to promoting well-being. Therapists can address the whole person and help clients achieve balance and fulfillment in their lives.
By incorporating these modalities and approaches, therapists can help clients become well-rounded individuals, experiencing benefits such as improved mental and physical health, increased resilience, and enhanced quality of life.
At SDW Wellness Therapy, we specialize in:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
An evidence-based approach to mental health treatment that focuses on challenging negative and irrational thoughts leading to dysfunctional behaviors and distress. We are trained in CBT techniques to assist clients in identifying and addressing these automatic negative thought patterns, helping them develop more adaptive coping strategies. CBT has been extensively studied and proven effective in treating various mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, and more. Through structured sessions and practical exercises, we will work collaboratively with our clients to explore the root causes of their distress and develop personalized strategies to promote positive change.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Strength Based Perspective are all valuable approaches in the field of mental health treatment, offering distinct but complementary strategies to address various concerns. In CBT, for example, therapists can explore how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors impact various dimensions of wellness and help clients develop coping strategies and skills to improve their overall well-being.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT emphasizes the importance of accepting one's thoughts, emotions, and sensations while committing to behavior change aligned with personal values. Through techniques such as cognitive defusion, mindfulness, and values clarification, individuals learn to develop psychological flexibility, enabling them to adapt to life's challenges and pursue a meaningful existence aligning their actions with their values across different dimensions of wellness.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing focuses on exploring ambivalence towards change and enhancing motivation for positive behavioral change. By identifying strengths and leveraging a strength-based perspective, MI helps individuals recognize their ability to make meaningful changes in their lives. Through empathetic listening and collaborative goal setting, MI encourages individuals to explore their readiness for change and commit to specific actions to achieve their goals. This approach aligns well with the principles of ACT, particularly in promoting acceptance and commitment to change.

While ACT and MI have distinct principles and techniques; they share common goals of promoting personal growth, resilience, and well-being. Integrating both approaches can provide a comprehensive framework for addressing mental health concerns and empowering individuals to make positive changes in their lives. Integrating a strength-based perspective into both ACT and MI further enhances their effectiveness in addressing mental health concerns.
Motivational Interviewing can empower clients to explore and enhance their motivation for positive change in areas related to wellness, such as physical health, relationships, and personal growth.
The Strength Based Perspective
The Strength-Based Perspective emphasizes an individual’s strengths and empowers them to align their actions with their values. This strength-based approach also fosters a collaborative relationship between therapist and client, enhancing the effectiveness of MI techniques. The supporting Therapist can now help clients overcome obstacles, gain confidence, and achieve their goals for improved well-being. By recognizing and utilizing their strengths, clients can experience greater empowerment and success in addressing mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, stress, and more. Overall, integrating a strength-based perspective into both ACT and MI can help individuals build resilience, overcome challenges, and pursue meaningful lives aligned with their value.
